Dublin based independent label and management company Rubyworks has announced it is to join forces with London based ARK Recordings; in a move which will see both labels utilising combined A & R, marketing and international resources. Both labels will continue to be distributed by PIAS in the UK.
Rubyworks' managing director Niall Muckian says: "We're delighted to be working with Jamie, Russell and the ARK roster of artists. This merger is a great opportunity for both Rubyworks and ARK to strengthen their positions in the music industry and forge the way for further development at both labels. It's an exciting time for independent labels and we're excited about this new development."
A sentiment echoed by Jamie Davis at ARK Recordings, who added: "It is great that two independent labels can join forces and offer acts a strong alternative to the majors and bigger indies. This will strengthen our international position, Rubyworks provide an established and very experienced infrastructure which will allow ARK to blossom. Both these independent labels are ambitious, and excited for what will be long term, sustained artist development. We are thrilled at the prospect of this new adventure".
Currently celebrating its first decade of releases; Rubyworks was founded by Muckian in 2002. The label is home to acclaimed acoustic rock duo Rodrigo y Gabriela; and has recently released new albums by Wallis Bird, The Minutes (on the Model Citizen imprint) and The Original Rudeboys (on Gotta Run). ARK was founded by Davis and live agent Russell Warby in 2005 and has recently released the widely praised Little Roy album 'Battle For Seattle'. New releases on ARK from Alberta Cross, Josephine and Deap Vally are scheduled for release this year.

ALBERTA CROSS - Songs of Patience

Songs of Patience
(The New Album, Ark Recordings; September 3rd, 2012)

"...spine-tingling songs evoke the widescreen paranoia of Verve's A Northern Soul [or] channeling the Appalachian blues of Mercury Rev. Outsider music to lift both the hearth and the roof" - Q

..the seismic guitars and high vocals look to My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon and Crazy Horse..but Alberta Cross sets aside those American bands' redemptive undercurrents of blues and gospel; instead it plunges into the very English despair of bands like Pink Floyd." The New York Times
"[Alberta Cross combines] wind tunnels of bent guitar riffs and distorted power chords with the haunting melodies of rural American music. It's all topped by Ericson Stakee's sweet, high-lonesome voice, which recalls both Jim James and Neil Young." Rolling Stone

Alberta Cross will release their exceptional second album, Songs of Patience, on Ark Recordings on September 3rd, 2012. The album's anthemic opening track, Magnolia, previews the album as a single release on 7"/download on July 30th.

Alberta Cross are Petter Ericson Stakee (vocals/guitar) and Terry Wolfers (bass), a Swede and a Londoner with Brooklyn as their home. Having met in an East End pub seven years ago, when Wolfers saved a young and let's say "over-confident" Ericson Stakee from some angered locals, they have since embarked on what Ericson Stakee calls "a long and wild road". The success of their acclaimed 2009 debut, Broken Side Of Time, saw the band tour the world, criss-crossing America more times than they'd care to count, playing headline shows and festivals like Sasquatch and Bonnaroo, and earning the patronage of bands like Them Crooked Vultures, Oasis and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, with whom they toured.

The title of Songs of Patience is, though, in many ways, literal. Once touring for their debut was done, the band had headed to an old, abandoned house in the middle of nowhere near Woodstock, NY. There, they braved the freezing winter and embraced a sense of the building's haunted past to start working on ideas for a new record. But this record was to take a much longer, more winding road, as Petter Ericson Stakee explains:

"In the three years since the last album we relocated to Los Angeles, moved back to New York, returned to being a band with just two permanent members and have had at least five producers' hands on the album. I loved LA, but the combination of relocating and hitting the studio straight away made me spiral out of control. I reached a very dark place. I partied too hard, blew my newly-earned money and went home to Sweden. Once I hit rock bottom and plummeted back to the planet, I knew what I had to do. I moved back to Brooklyn and reformed my home there. And that's what Alberta Cross is, me and Terry, my cockney brother."

Now pared down to its original incarnation as a two-piece, Alberta Cross were able to look at what they'd created so far, open up their creativity, pen additional tracks and re-mix/re-track a few songs from the L.A. sessions in New York. They laid down new songs, rounding out the original songs to be an expansive, thoughtful portrait of their experiences. The result is one of the finest, most visceral rock albums of 2012.

Ultimately, Songs of Patience is both a throwback to Alberta Cross' roots and a progression forward. It's a record that is as soulful as it is driven, each song more visceral than the next. The album veers from the melodic sprawl of "Magnolia" to the pensive provocation of "Lay Down," a song bolstered by crashing guitars and one of the record's most thrilling choruses. "Wasteland" is a hook-laden, no-holds-barred rocker showcasing Ericson Stakee's voice at its finest, while "Crate of Gold" explores the motivations of the Occupy movement in all of its fuzzed-out, bass-driven glory. Indeed, Songs of Patience is the sum of three years' worth of parts a struggle that concluded in one hell of an album, and a brilliant new chapter in the musical journey of Alberta Cross.

Josephine 'A Freak A' Out 29th November

'Everybody's talking about a singer called Josephine. In fact I think I might love her most of all"
Lauren Laverne (for Grazia)

"A timeless, distinctive, soulful voice. This is more than an impressive debut"
Music Week

'Her striking voice and subtle arrangement make for a thing of beauty. A unique young British talent'
Record Of The Day

'From Manchester. A keening, astonishing new soul voice. Love at first listen'
The Sunday Times

A Freak A is the new EP by the hugely talented JOSEPHINE and is the follow up to her successful summer EP 'I Think It Was Love'. The tracks are set for release through Ark Recordings on November 29th.

Josephine's music is inspired by the musicians of the Manchester area coupled with the musical heritage of her West African family. House parties invariably centred on her mother's collection of vinyl: Hi-Life, Congolese music and Soul. Stacked in the front room was King Sunny Ade, The Isley Brothers, The Supremes, Ali Farka Toure & Johnny Cash.

Josephine explains - "I had this musical history being a Mancunian but there was also the heritage I belonged to coming from a West African family. At school it was all about indie but when I went home it was African. The rhythms and subjects were totally different to the Manchester sounds. I never try to cram all these influences in, hopefully they just come out in a natural way. Lots of the guitar riffs I use have an element of Hi-Life in there."

A FREAK A was written and produced with Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Grace Jones) following the glowing reception she received for I Think It Was Love. With A FREAK A they have managed to create a song that is upbeat & rhythmic with an intelligent arrangement that builds into a uplifting bright tune. The second track is the beautifully rhythmic ballad Davey followed by the third and last track Salt Lake which is a pacey, Americana tinged tune.

Josephine explains the lyrical story behind the lead track: 'A Freak A is really one thing. It sums up, I guess how I've felt growing up and throughout-out my life. It sums up being from a different background to all your friends. It's also about feeling like a freak 'cause you're not really into the things everybody else is into. I suppose it's a bit angsty really. Feeling like an odd ball musically as well as you don't really fit into the usual boxes. A Freak A...can also mean AfricA...'.

The reviews of her debut release were amazing (see quotes), with the likes of 6 Music's Lauren Laverne, The Sunday Times, Music Week and Jazz Fm, all hailing Josephine as a massive British talent and a true artist to watch out for. Her hotly anticipated debut album is set for release next year.

"The album isn't finished yet but it will be a mix of upbeat songs like A Freak A and some more down tempo ballads. I like to keep things simple in terms of lyrics with strong messages."

'A Freak A' EP is set for release on ARK Recordings.
