JOSEPHINE - 'A FREAK A' EP OUT 6TH DECEMBER

Oct 22nd – JOSEPHINE - 'A FREAK A' OUT 6TH DECEMBER

'Everybody's talking about a singer called Josephine. In fact I think I might love her most of all"
Lauren Laverne (for Grazia)

"A timeless, distinctive, soulful voice. This is more than an impressive debut"
Music Week

'Her striking voice and subtle arrangement make for a thing of beauty. A unique young British talent'
Record Of The Day

'From Manchester. A keening, astonishing new soul voice. Love at first listen'
The Sunday Times

A Freak A is the new EP by the hugely talented JOSEPHINE and is the follow up to her successful summer EP 'I Think It Was Love'. The tracks are set for release through Ark Recordings on November 29th.

Josephine's music is inspired by the musicians of the Manchester area coupled with the musical heritage of her West African family. House parties invariably centred on her mother's collection of vinyl: Hi-Life, Congolese music and Soul. Stacked in the front room was King Sunny Ade, The Isley Brothers, The Supremes, Ali Farka Toure & Johnny Cash.

Josephine explains - "I had this musical history being a Mancunian but there was also the heritage I belonged to coming from a West African family. At school it was all about indie but when I went home it was African. The rhythms and subjects were totally different to the Manchester sounds. I never try to cram all these influences in, hopefully they just come out in a natural way. Lots of the guitar riffs I use have an element of Hi-Life in there."

A FREAK A was written and produced with Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Grace Jones) following the glowing reception she received for I Think It Was Love. With A FREAK A they have managed to create a song that is upbeat & rhythmic with an intelligent arrangement that builds into a uplifting bright tune. The second track is the beautifully rhythmic ballad Davey followed by the third and last track Salt Lake which is a pacey, Americana tinged tune.

Josephine explains the lyrical story behind the lead track: 'A Freak A is really one thing. It sums up, I guess how I've felt growing up and throughout-out my life. It sums up being from a different background to all your friends. It's also about feeling like a freak 'cause you're not really into the things everybody else is into. I suppose it's a bit angsty really. Feeling like an odd ball musically as well as you don't really fit into the usual boxes. A Freak A...can also mean AfricA...'.

The reviews of her debut release were amazing (see quotes), with the likes of 6 Music's Lauren Laverne, The Sunday Times, Music Week and Jazz Fm, all hailing Josephine as a massive British talent and a true artist to watch out for. Her hotly anticipated debut album is set for release next year.

"The album isn't finished yet but it will be a mix of upbeat songs like A Freak A and some more down tempo ballads. I like to keep things simple in terms of lyrics with strong messages."

'A Freak A' EP is set for release on ARK Recordings.

JOSEPHINE 'I THINK IT WAS LOVE' EP - OUT NOW

Aug 19th – 'I Think It Was Love' EP

"Listening to 'I Think It Was Love', you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd stumbled upon some lost classic soul recording, rather than a young musician from Manchester. Her voice is something incredible; warm, wise, confident and able to stop even the hardest of cynics in their tracks" - CMU Daily

"Josephine is unlike any singer I've ever worked with, her talent is in equal measure as high as the heavens and as deep as the Mariana trench. It astounds me." - Ed Harcourt

"She's remarkable. An old soul singer in a beautiful young girl" - Guy Garvey

JOSEPHINE is a new folktropic voice forged in the heart of the North of England. 'I Think It Was Love' EP is set for release July 26thon Ark Recordings.

An patchwork of influences from West African high life to her local heroes Morrissey & Marr... from the inspirational activist/guitarist/songwriter Odetta to modern US weird folk music.

Such a richness of influences came partly thanks to her Liberian Mother's vast collection of vinyl albums. Stacked in the front room when she was growing up there was Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, The Isley Brothers, Johnny Cash and The Supremes. Then there were her Mum's house parties; "she used to play a lot of high life and congo – her parties were madness really. High life to her is pop music."

Growing up in the late 80s - 'Manchester is a music city and it's easy to get involved. An amazing album like 'Hatful of Hollow' does spur you on. In the videos they ride past a sign saying Cheetham Hill - where I grew up - and you think 'it's possible to be from a place like this and come out with something that brilliant'.
JOSEPHINE has been forging her sound and distinctive voice with live performances since she was 15, inspired by great storytellers - " I put the guitar down and free write in my notebook, trying to get to the centre of the idea - I like to have strong melodies but lyrics that leave some suggestion for you to come back to on a second and third listen.'

'I Think It Was Love' EP is set for release on the 26th July on ARK Recordings.

1. I Think It Was Love

2. One Princess of Cheetham Hill

3. One Song
